Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to capture, handle and transport companion animals.This unit applies to individuals working in the companion animal industry sector where it is necessary to transport companion animals. This includes transportation to and from pet shops, boarding kennels and catteries, companion animal training, groomer and breeding establishments, mobile animal facilities, stables, client residences or veterinary practices. This unit applies to individuals who take responsibility for their own work and for the quality of the work of others. They use discretion and judgement in the selection, allocation and use of available resources.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.NOTE: The terms 'occupational health and safety' (OHS) and 'work health and safety' (WHS) generally have the same meaning in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the national model WHS legislation has not been implemented, RTOs must contextualise the unit of competency by referring to current OHS legislative requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan the capture and restraint of companion animals
  • Identify animals and assess risks according to WHS and work place policies and procedures
  • Select appropriate capture techniques and equipment and prepare equipment for use
  • Prepare transport housing and ensure high standards of hygiene and infection control according to WHS and workplace policies and procedures
       
Element: Capture animals
  • Capture animals in a safe and humane manner and according to WHS and animal welfare policies and procedures
  • Handle animals correctly and monitor carefully for stress or injury
  • Place animals in transport housing and secure housing correctly
       
Element: Prepare animals for movement
  • Provide advice to client on appropriate transport and relocation procedures
  • Complete documentation according to workplace procedures/ practices

Assessment Tasks
